What is ecotoxing? 13.1.08 'Ecotoxing' is helping the environment at the same time as getting your life back in shape. Our carbon footprint is often increased unnecessarily by the habits of our lifestyles. Too many consumer goods, energy inefficiency, unnecessary commitments, unwanted packaging, junk mail, for example, (many thrust upon us) all contribute unwittingly to a huge amount of unwanted excess. Sometimes this everyday accumulation of 'stuff' can leaves us feeling overwhelmed, with our without global warming. In fact in affluent countries it’s estimated that about 50 per cent of what we now own is basically clutter – stuff we don’t really require or never use. Ecotoxing is reassessing what we really need and how much of what we are consuming is actually for our own welfare as well as that of the planet. People who have ‘dejunked’ talking about the experience as a turning point that has allowed them to reassess their lives and feel more liberated psychologically. Ecotoxing takes this one step further: It’s also helping restore the balance of the planet. Therefore the feel good factor is at least doubled. I believe we are entering a new era when we are being judged, not only on our achievements, but also by our environmental selfishness. If you are taking no steps whatsoever to follow the current trend of carbon offsetting people can mentally label you ill-informed or insensitive. Ecotoxing will bring you in tune with a new global trend. Do you have stories to tell us about ecotoxing? We invite your comments and will be featuring articles on ecotoxing and the positive benefits for you on these pages. Louise Burfitt-Dons |
