The Impact of Climate Change on Australia

For Australians the increase in temperatures globally will be felt mostly through more extreme weather such as heat waves leading to an increase in bushfires.

It is predicted that increased temperatures will threaten Australian agriculture quite severely. The area of land currently used for agricultural production will decrease substantially. Additionally competition for water supply will further increase production costs as well as put stress on rivers and ground water systems. The water is predicted to become scarcer also because crucial winter rainfall is likely to decrease.

Ninety Australian animals have already been identified at risk from climate change including the state emblems such as the Leadbeater’s possum, the koala and the hairy-nosed wombat.

Three of Australia’s World Heritage Areas, namely the Great Barrier Reef, Kakadu and the Wet Tropics will be affected in a detrimental way. For example, if temperatures increase by just 1 degree Celsius iit is likely that Australia’s wet tropical mountain rainforest will decrease by half.
