Hot Women Campaign Supporter Anna Burns

Founder of Eco Emporia talks about her world voyage researching eco-friendly gifts, how ecotoxing is at the heart of their business and her enthusiasm for the Hot Women Campaign.

I got married in 2006. Afterwards my husband Peter and I set off round the world for a year. It was a wonderful adventure. Reusing and recycling is a way of life for so many people in other countries and we wanted to bring that idea back home.

Ecotoxing is a new way of looking at the things you own, which is what the Eco Emporia is all about. Everyone gains with ecotoxing because you are decluttering—and that can be helpful to you in a range of different ways. Then, if you recycle things you no longer need, other people can benefit. As the saying goes ‘One person's trash is another person's treasure,’ and that’s so true, isn’t it? The other aspect is looking at going forward, looking at the buying of new stuff. So ecotoxing to me is also asking of a product you are about to buy, ‘Where’s it come from?’ ‘Who's made it? ‘Has it been made using recycled materials?’ It’s taking a real interest in products, rather than just acquiring them for the sake of it.

We are really supportative of the Hot Women Campaign because women often play the key role in buying gifts for other people. This campaign focuses on women and makes them aware of how they can influence what happens to the environment on a daily basis. They’re the ones who also make many of the other purchases such as food and clothes. Influencing those decisions is really important to helping slow climate change.

Our online business Eco Emporia is really ideal for all Hot Women Campaign supporters because everything we offer has been made using discarded materials. Our skilled craftspeople are passionate about reusing and recycling. They love turning something someone’s discarded into something really unique and useful. I suppose you can say our gifts have a special aura; they are certainly unique. Surely that makes them better to give than mass-produced factory items!

Our dream is that one day, using reclaimed materials will be normal for every product and that’s why we think the Hot Women Campaign is terrific because it’s getting that message across. It is saying, ‘Think before you acquire.’
