Hot Women Campaign Supporter Ella Dickenson

A full time volunteer and media support officer for UK's student campaigning network People and Planet, Ella Dickenson speaks about what ecotoxing means to her, her support for the Hot Women Campaign and how a holiday abroad alerted her to the perils of climate change.

Ecotoxing is a good idea because it gets us in touch with our soul, spirituality and humanity, living in a way that respects the earth and environnment. Human beings were supposed to live in harmony with their surroundings, not against them, degrading and devastating them. We must ensure that the richness and wonder of the earth is conserved for future generations.

If enough people can collectively change their carbon hungry lifestyle by making small changes at a time, collectively this will be enough to create a sustainable future and that's why Hot Women Campaign is a good idea.

Plus the campaign encourages people to go for the ideals they believe in and be true to themselves regardless of the struggle or unpopularity they may face along the way.

I have always been concerned about climate change but two main events in particular really had an effect on me. Firstly, I was lucky enough to go to the Maldives a couple of times in about 2000.

Whilst snorkelling I noticed that many of the reefs were completely white, as if they had been bleached. I asked the dive master why it was. He said that the summer before, because of global warming, the sea had got warmer by 1 degree. To some people this does not sound a lot, but in ecological terms it is catastrophic. So I saw for myself one of the effects of climate change. This temperature rise destroyed most of the reef completely and as a result instead of seeing the wonderful colours I was expecting it was all white. It had died.

The reef cannot just recover. Apparently it will take hundreds of years to become what it once was and that's assuming global warming does not increase further which, in the present climate, looks unlikely. This has impacted on the marine life that depends on the coral for its survival. It is also predicted that, as low lying islands, by 2050 the Maldives will be unihabitable. As sea levels rise they may dissapear altogether and that saddens me.

Then the floods of July 07 were a real eye opener for me. All this talk about climate change can seem very far removed from us, but then being directly affected by the worst floods I can remember in my whole lifetime brought it home. Very soon now we will be reaching the point of no return. The situation is getting so bad we can already see the effects on our weather systems.

These two incidents have changed my views on life. Now the key to my happiness is helping others and helping the planet. I want to do what I can to fight climate change.
