Hot
Women Campaign Supporter Gemma Rogers
UK
RSPB Media Officer Gemma Rogers talks about how a new job alerted her
to climate change issues, buying her first house and how she thinks that
the Hot Women Campaign could change the attitudes of women worldwide.
Ecotoxing
is a good idea because it gets us in touch with our soul, spirituality
and humanity, living in a way that respects the earth and environnment.
Human beings were supposed to live in harmony
with their surroundings, not against them, degrading and devastating them.
We must ensure that the richness and wonder of the earth is conserved
for future generations.
The hot
women campaign is all about women doing their bit to combat global warming
and I believe that we can all play a part no matter how small. Lets face
it, most of us women love to shop and small decisions on what we buy and
the packaging we use is a great place to start and can genuinely make
a difference to the environment. I work for the RSPB and know the importance
of protecting habitats for wildlife and am inspired further by this campaign.
Its a gentle nudge to inform and enthuse, and could change the attitudes
of women worldwide.
I became aware of climate change properly when I started working at the
RSPB, having known the concept but not fully understanding the issues
before that. Seeing what a difference positive measures can make to amazing
and beautiful bird species really pricked my ears up and I became further
resolved to do my bit on buying my first house last year. My boyfriend
and I were horrified at the amount of packaging that came with most things
we were buying to kit our house out, and vowed to buy products with less
unecessary paper, plastic and bubble wrap. This may seem a relatively
small step but if everyone took the same approach, we could see a good
result!
The RSPB is a member of the Stop Climate Chaos coalition which is a body
of like minded charities and ther organisations trying to help halt the
effects of climate change. Climate change is already affecting the natural
world with birds migrating earlier and flowers blooming ahead of schedule.
We will lose some bird species altogether and the overall impact of the
issue will be negative. If the world takes strong action to curb greenhouse
gas emissions, we should be able to limit climate change to less than
a 2°C average temperature rise. Nevertheless, a two degree rise will
still have a marked impact on the UK’s diverse ecosystems.
