Hot Women Campaign China The Hot
Women campaign is about Chinese women recognising the crucial role they
can play in the global warming debate. Our attitude to our planet is vital
for its survival. China accounts for nearly 15% of the world’s greenhouse gases ranking second heaviest after the US, and as a rapidly developing industrialised nation this is set to continue with growth at almost 10 per cent each year as millions of Chinese spend their fast-rising incomes. China is still the world’s biggest producer and consumer of coal but is trying to develop alternative energy sources. It also implements a one-child policy which has reduced population by 300 million births since the late 70s. Glaciers on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau known as the Roof f the world (where the rivers Yangtze, Yellow, Brahmaputra, Mekong and Salween rivers all originate) have been melting at a rate of 7 per cen .annually triggering drought, desertification and sandstorms. In the worst storm on April 17, 2007 an estimated 336,000 tons of dust fell on Beijing, leaving the air quality in the capital at hazardous levels. Last year Bejing experienced its warmest winter for 30 years, according to the China Daily. In the north-west parts of the Shaanxi province saw as little as 10% of the average rainfall which meant that 300,000 people went short of drinking water. Experts are predicting a 3 to 4 degree rise in temperatures by the end of this century. Chinese winters will become less cold, but there is higher likelihood of heavy rainfall and high summer temperatures.
